The rumen is not a digestive organ; it is a microbial fermentation chamber.
Performance in sheep is ultimately dictated by the efficiency of rumen microbial populations, which convert feed into volatile fatty acids that supply energy, as well as microbial protein that supports growth.
In inconsistent grazing systems, especially natural grazing, rumen conditions are rarely stable. Fluctuations in pH are common, substrate supply is irregular, and microbial turnover becomes inefficient, all of which limit optimal fermentation.
Silage, however, introduces fermentation stability even before the feed is consumed. Through controlled lactic acid fermentation, sugars are pre-converted into organic acids, undesirable microbes are suppressed, and the overall digestibility of the feed is significantly improved.
As a result, microbial colonisation in the rumen occurs more rapidly, fibre degradation becomes more efficient, and the production of volatile fatty acids is increased, directly enhancing the animal’s ability to extract energy from its diet. Most importantly, silage reduces rumen lag time, allowing animals to convert feed into energy more efficiently.
Winterstorm silage can be used as a supplement to grazing, or as a full feed.
This is not about feeding more, it is about feeding smarter at a microbial level.
